- City Council must deliver $60 million in funding to Philadelphia public schools, which has been asked for by the school district and Mayor Nutter. The City needs to show leadership in addressing the funding crisis that is undermining our children’s schools.
- City Council needs to demand that Harrisburg also allocate money to Philadelphia public schools (the state has cut $300 million in each budget year since 2011 from Philadelphia, the harshest cut of any district in PA).
- City Council also needs to tell the Philadelphia School District to redo its schools budget. In a time of crisis, the district should not be allocating $15 million to a cyber charter or $11 million to a contract with the Pearson testing company. The current budget cuts to our children’s classrooms are unacceptable and would make it impossible to operate schools. Any budget that puts contracts ahead of District-managed schools cannot be approved by parents.
